A Guide To Skiing in Gatlinburg

Enjoy Gatlinburg Skiing This February

Gatlinburg is known for its many attractions, but did you know you can spend your winter days skiing here, too? Ober Mountain is a popular ski area and one of the best in the Smoky Mountains. Not only is this a great place for anyone who wants to enjoy a little bit of skiing and snowboarding, but it’s a perfect spot for anyone who wants to try the sport for the first time!

Is it your first time visiting? This is what you’ll want to know:

Weather

February happens to be one of the best months to experience snow in Gatlinburg, specifically on Ober Mountain. Temperatures typically average in the mid-30s, perfect for comfortable skiing and snowboarding, and plenty of snow to go around thanks to the mountain’s snowmaking machine. You get the best of both worlds with more mild temperatures but all the other benefits of winter!

Slopes

Ober has a base elevation of 2,700 feet and a top elevation of 3,300 feet (a totally vertical top of 500 feet.) The mountain offers 28 skiable acres with 10 ski trails, 4 ski lifts, and a terrain park. There is a range of trail difficulties: 25% beginner, 50% intermediate, and 25% advanced. Some trails might be closed due to inclement weather so it’s best to check Ober’s daily snow report to know where you will be able to ski.

As we mentioned previously, Ober is a great spot for first-time skiers and snowboarders.
Not only does the mountain offer ski, snowboard, and helmet rentals, but it also offers winter clothing rentals like jackets and snow pants.

For those who want a little help from a professional, Ober also has skiing and snowboarding lessons. Whether you need a refresher or are a first-timer, they will teach you the basics like gliding, slowing down, turning, and stopping.

Other Mountain Activities

Outside of skiing, Ober Mountain offers plenty of winter activities for people of all ages. Take the aerial tramway for scenic views of the mountain, enjoy year-round ice skating and ice bumper cars at the indoor facility, hang out in the Snow Zone with your little ones, experience the Wildlife Encounter, feel the thrills of snow tubing, and more!

Additionally, there are a variety of shops and dining options for quick bites, coffee, sweets, and sit-down meals.
