Which Hawaiian Island Should You Visit?

What Island Is the Best to Vacation in Hawaii?

So, which Hawaiian island should you visit? It can be an overwhelming decision! Don’t worry, though. Carefree Destinations’ team is here to help you narrow in on some options:

For a Diverse Landscape —The Big Island

If your goal during a Hawaii vacation is to experience all of the diverse landscapes that the islands have to offer, The Big Island should be at the top of your bucket list. The Big Island is larger than all other islands combined and is home to 10 of the 13 climate zones in the world, making it the ideal place for nature lovers.

Outside of the usual but breathtaking Hawaii spots many people think of when they think of a tropical vacation, The Big Island has several unique opportunities you won’t want to miss. Mauna Kea Summit is located 13,000 feet above elevation and is home to multiple observatories. It is known for having some of the most beautiful sunsets, sunrises, and stargazing experiences around. There is also Hawaii Volcanoes National park where guests can see the still-active Halemaumau Crater and the very active Pu’u O’o Vent.

Some other points of interest include hiking through lush rainforests, several beloved waterfalls, pristine beaches, and unlimited water excursions. No matter if you love the land or sea, there is an activity waiting for you here.

For the Traditional Hawaii Experience — O’ahu

If your top concern is fitting in as many Hawaii experiences as possible during your stay, O’ahu could be the ideal island for you. O’ahu is the most visited Hawaiian Island by vacationers and for good reason. Honolulu, its capital, provides guests with the perfect mix of city and beachside living with its ample shopping areas, dining opportunities, dynamic nightlife, and access to some of the most iconic Hawaii beaches like Waikiki Beach.

O’ahu is also well-known for its historic sites and learning experiences, like the Byodo-In Temple, the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Iolani Palace, and so much more. After your time learning about the history of the island and the many people who have inhabited it, you can book some of the popular water excursions available like snorkeling, surfing, whale watching, sunset cruises, and other exciting adventures.

For those who love hiking, there are several trails and lookout points we suggest during your stay. Diamond Head State Monument is always a fan favorite, but there are other amazing spots like Makapu’u Point and Lighthouse Trail, Nu’uanu Pali, and Lanikai Pillboxes. No matter where you turn on this island, you’ll be met with endless opportunities to make the most out of your trip to Hawaii.

For The Best Beaches — Maui

Although O’ahu can often be referred to as the island with the best beaches because of its abundance and accessibility, Maui cannot be beat. Not only do you get to escape the crowds of some of the more popular vacation areas, but you’ll truly find a beach for every type of beach-goer here.

Ka’anapali Beach is a top contender because of its many nearby conveniences and is a great spot for kids. Popular activities include swimming, bodyboarding, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Honolua Bay is a famous snorkeling and surfing beach and another great spot for families. Kapalua Bay has been rated as the “Best Beach in the World” by Conde Nast and you might even see some Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles during your visit! Other notable spots include Kamaole Beaches, Baldwin Beach Park, and Wai’anapanapa State Park.

As if the beaches weren’t enough, Maui offers even more to its guests. Visit the Haleakalā Volcano & Pools of Ohe’o at Haleakalā National Park, drive the Hana Highway for insane views, dine locally at the many oceanside eateries, take a trip out to Molokini for snorkeling, visit the many cultural sites available, and so much more.

For Land Adventurers — Kauai

Kauai is known as “the Garden Isle” and the name couldn’t be more true for this beautiful island. Kauai is known for its ample hiking opportunities and it’s the place avid hikers want to visit next when they head over to the islands. Between the lush rainforests, waterfalls, and breathtaking lookouts, it’s no wonder so many people choose to visit.

We highly suggest a trip down any of these trails for some of the most incredible hiking experiences that Hawaii has to offer: the Hanakapi’ai Falls Trail, the Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls, the Awa’awapuhi Trail, the Hoopii Falls Trail, the Maha-ulepu Hertigate Trail, the Kalalau Trail, Kalepa Ridge Trail, and the Nounou Mountain East trail.

Outside of all of the hiking, Kauai is a great place for those who are looking for a quiet but fun tropical getaway. You’ll want to snorkel on Makuna Beach, also referred to as Tunnels, to see all the fish and hopefully sea turtles. Kayaking Hanalei Bay will give you other impeccable views of the island, just from a different angle. Take a rafting tour down the Na Pali Coast, and even try out a helicopter tour for even more insane views.
